Innovium's TERALYNX Great Leap Forward in Ethernet

March 16, 2017

Building the next generation of Ethernet connectivity these days is no mean feat. It requires not only the ability to provide for this generation's needs, but also to offer at least somewhat of the next generation's needs as well. To that end, Innovium has brought out its new TERALYNX line of Ethernet switches, which should deliver some great new value going forward.

The TERALYNX system not only delivers on speed, but also on capability, adding some unexpected new features to the mix. Performance is front and center here, as the TERALYNX system actually clears the 10 terabytes per second mark, which was considered for some time to be top of the heap. Throw in improved telemetry and programmability, along with new, larger buffers and even better latency levels, and the end result is a package that offers as much as six times the advantage of many common alternatives, reports note.

The TERALYNX system also offers support for several different Ethernet standards ranging from 10GbE to 400GbE, and can offer as many as 32 ports of 400GbE all from one device. Software compatible options, meanwhile, can be offered at 12.8, 9.6, 6.4, and 3.2Tbps, which in turn offers a slate of options for those who use it.

With word from the Cisco Cloud Index report suggesting that large scale data center operations will see current traffic levels quintuple by 2020, and increasing network demands only getting larger besides, the demand for Ethernet switches that can keep up with the demand will be vital. That should give Innovium a clear edge in the market going forward.

The numbers don't lie here; there's only more demand for data the farther along we go. Take a mobile workforce that increasingly needs access to data remotely—not to mention the ability to send just as much as they receive—and an entertainment structure that increasingly needs data as well, and the world's hunger for bandwidth will only increase. We have video games now that are multi-gigabyte downloads, often needing multi-gigabyte patch downloads not too long after and sometimes on an ongoing basis. Streaming video, perhaps the most data-hungry of applications, works wonders in both entertainment and business, and ensures an ongoing data demand. We thus need the right infrastructure—Ethernet switches are all a part of this—to ensure access to that bandwidth, and that's where tools like TERALYNX can shine.

It's all about the bandwidth at the end of the day, and Innovium's TERALYNX is in a good position to help. Data centers will be demanding ever more, and from the look of it, Innovium can help meet that demand.
