L-com Introduces Cat5e Industrial Ethernet Cable
L-com Global Connectivity now offers two new families of Cat5e cables designed for outdoor use in industrial Ethernet applications.
The TRD855HFT-series cables feature a Thermoplastic Elastomer cable jacket. That’s resistant to industrial oils, UV damage, and weld spatter. These cables also have a CMX flame rating.
Meanwhile the new TRD855HFP-series cables are sheathed in a polyurethane cable jacket. That makes them resistant to UV damage and water.
Both of these solution sets are not only designed for harsh weather and environmental scenarios, but they also can perform well in repetitive motion applications.
These new cable product families come in eight standard lengths. The cables also can be ordered in custom lengths.

Among the other companies that offer Cat5e cable solutions are Alpha Wire, Belden, Brad, CAE Multimedia Connect, Harding, Lapp, Molex Premise Networks, RS Pro, S2Ceb-Groupe Cae, and Turck Banner.
Cat5e cable has been around for about 15 years. It stands for Category 5 enhanced, and it’s an update to the older Cat5.
Cat5 and Cat5e look about the same – although some manufacturers, like L-com, have improved the durability of the cable jackets on Cat5e cables. Both are backward compatible. But they are marked differently, and they support different connectivity speeds.
Tripp Lite’s Jan. 23 blog says that Cat5e “supports data transfer speeds up to one gigabit per second at 100 MHz up to 328 feet. Crosstalk among the wires within the cable is reduced, resulting in less interference and less chance of transmission error. Certainly, it will provide capable performance for most of today’s applications, but Cat5e also leaves less opportunity for upgrading in the future.”
It should also be noted that there are also now Cat6 and Cat6a cables available. Cat6 supports data transfers of up to 10gbps at 250MHz, but it only offers this capacity at distances of up to 165 feet. After that, it delivers bandwidth on par with that of Cat5e. Meanwhile, Cat6a supports 10gpbs speeds at up to 328 feet and at 500MHz. That, Tripp Lite says, makes it the best choice for gigabit Ethernet deployments
