General Micro Systems Introduces Military-Grade Solutions
General Micro Systems Inc. has come out with a multi-domain server and multi-port Ethernet switch/router that’s entirely designed and made in the United States. And it’s suitable for U.S. military applications.
The S1U401-MD Cyclone is based on the Intel Xeon E5 server CPU. This 1U rack-mount unit packs in a lot of performance, makes the most of available space, offers a high level of security, and is reasonably priced, according to the company. CEO Ben Sharfi of General Micro Systems says this solution represents a 6:1 space reduction per domain.
“Cyclone’s density is unheard of, which is why we designed our own motherboard that’s one-quarter the size of something from Supermicro,” he says. “No one else could accomplish all this security, functionality, performance and ruggedness in only 1U.”
General Micro Systems says the Cyclone is ideal for the Army’s multi-domain battlefield and command networks; for the Navy and Marine shipboard op centers and command/control applications; and for the Air Force’s airborne C4ISR platforms. Cyclone is available in rugged 110/220 VAC or 28 VDC voltage versions.
General Micro Systems is showcasing the new system at the Association of the United States Army annual meeting this week in Washington D.C.
Each S1U401-MD has black and red networking domains. Each has its own CPU, which can support 36 virtual machines, meaning 1RU supports 72 virtual machines. Cyclone uses the processor’s 40x PCIe Gen 3 lanes at 8 gigabits per second to communicate with the drives, I/O, and networking in each domain.
“Cyclone has four front panel removable drives per domain (eight total drives), and each SAS/SATA/NVMe drive is accessed at the industry’s fastest Gen 3 speeds via SATA III, SAS-3 or PCIe Gen 3,” the company explains. “Drives can be encrypted for ultimate security, and they function as network-attached storage.”
